“How to Raise an Independent Adult:
Over-parenting and its Consequences”
with Julie Lythcott-Haims,
author and former Freshman Dean at Stanford University
“Helicopter parenting” is a term we have all heard in reference to overly involved and protective parents, but few use to describe themselves. Despite the best intentions, the “help” that parents provide can get in the way of a child’s development and, more insidiously, implies a lack of confidence in their ability to get things done without parental intervention.
In her 10 years as Dean of Freshmen and Undergraduate Advising at Stanford, “Dean Julie” saw firsthand a trend in which students are becoming increasingly accomplished in all academic areas, yet less able to make their way independently. She discovered that her colleagues around the country were seeing the same thing in their student populations. From that experience, she has written, “How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success”
Lythcott-Haims will discuss how “the over-parenting herd has become a bully we feel the need to go along with” and she will suggest how we can modify our parenting to foster independence, creativity, and resilience in our young adults.
