Nov. 18, 2013 – Top Dog: The Science of Winning and Losing with Po Bronson

Po Bronson, San Francisco author and parent, questions our basic assumptions about parenting and competition and uses scientific research and analysis to find answers to questions we didn’t even know to ask. In Top Dog, Bronson and co-author Ashley Merryman tackle competition and how differences in factors such as how many kids are in the room taking an SAT can make a big difference in test scores. The book looks at why male analysts dominate on Wall Street, even though women do the job better, how nuclear engineers can learn from professional tennis players and the process that leaves the best symphonies with the worst musicians. Bronson and Merryman also wrote “NurtureShock,” a popular New York Times bestseller about parenting and children. The book led to a series of Newsweek columns about the science of child development and how simple things like board games can boost IQs.
